Rail By Night.

On this page is my experimentation in night photography and what better a subject then the NSWGR once the bloodlines of the Nation. Railways stations where the heart of any outback town and more often then no the town's where built along the railway rather then the railway built to the towns.

With the change of goods transport from rail to road the town station's slowly died off from the lifeblood of the nation to derelict building as beautiful as they are that litter the outback, Many station's are built od the same plan but are very much different.

So please scroll down and have a browse as you visit some of the historic railway stations well preserved at in the silent night. I really admire Winston O Link who by himself took it upon himself to preserve the working steam railways of America the only way he could by Photography and sound recordings , please take a look at the museum dedicated to him by the link to the right side. He was really a master and his photograph's are masterpieces originals gaining many thousands at auctions worldwide.

While most photo's below are made using available light with station lights , train lights and the moon some are made using those and a flash with manual setting. Films are 400ISO , 100ISO and 50ISO using both print and slide film, With the long exposure times anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes a good solid tripod is needed i use Manfrotto. Also with the long exposure's and the bitter cold of the winter it really sucks the power out of batteries if you are using a camera with electronic shutter 4 AA's normally last a couple rolls of film and using the flash at mostly full power the batteries go real quick.

With the Canberra Tourist railway at the moment is using Diesel electric power due to the overhaul of there steam locomotive 1210 which incidentally hauled the first train into Canberra.

A couple restored FS coach's await at Queenbeyan Station.

A pair of 73 class locomotives await to run around there train.

Queenbeyan Awaits quietly for a train that might never come.

Queenbeyan Station awaits in the silent of the night.

Queenbeyan Station Box. Once overworked now silent.

Once again Queenbeyan station is busy.

Once the heart of a city now only graced by a couple explorers a day.

Queenbeyan box awaits its next call of duty.

Explorer unit finally gets some rest after a long day.

73 Unit and its train break the silence that has all but taken over the southern monaro line.
